Design ideas for small bedrooms

We often have conversations with families who tell us that they love where they live but they are struggling for space as their children grow up. They are usually reluctant to move but small bedrooms that were once adequate for their young children are now cramped and lacking storage space.

In this family’s case not only is the room small, it is also very narrow which limits the options for standard furniture.

What this family needed for their daughter was a solid bed, lots of storage and a work space. They also wanted furniture that was well built, attractive to look at and made to last. Most of all, they wanted a design that maximised the space available and made best use of the room’s limited size.

After finding out from the family what they needed, our creative team designed a set of bedroom furniture for this small bedroom. To enable the family to visualise each proposal we recreated the bedroom on the computer and developed 3D images of each item of bedroom furniture until we were all satisfied that the design worked for this compact room and was feasible within the budget allocated.

Cabin bed with pull out desk and plenty of storage!

The design is developed around a cabin bed which allows for plenty of storage underneath. The bed is designed to fit a narrow mattress to make the best use of the long, thin shape of the room. Two cupboards with shelves are fitted under the bed either side of the ladder. The ladder itself is fitted with soft-close drawers between each rung. The bed surround is shaped around the window to give the room a fitted look.

We designed a special narrow wardrobe to fit between the bed and the wall. The full height wardrobe can be fitted with shelves or a hanging rail – or a combination of both. This gives extra flexibility. Lastly, we too full advantage of the narrow aspect of the room by creating a pull out desk. The desk pulls out from the bed to rest on the opposite wall, sliding out to sit beneath the window.

In one small space we have created somewhere to sleep, study and relax.

The bedroom furniture set is constructed in oak and plywood to balance the needs for good looks and strength whilst keeping the cost as affordable as possible. We have chosen to hand apply a lacquer finish for practicality and ease of maintenance.

The result is a great space which makes the best use of every centimetre of this very small bedroom and allows for working, storing, sleeping and chilling. The contemporary style and robust construction mean it will last for a long time, even with everyday family use. This cabin bed with pull out desk and wardrobe set is a perfect solution for families who feel a bit cramped but don’t want to move.
