The customer challenge for this blanket chest
This elegant blanket chest was designed for a customer in Liverpool and is handcrafted in ripple maple and walnut. It was one of our most challenging projects due to the sweeping curved front and the complex angles within the walnut frame components.
There was a practical purpose to this project. Our customer needed a chest of a specific size that could be used for storage. In addition to the large space found in all blanket boxes, this one needed to include an area for smaller items too. Style was an important factor and the finished product had to look minimalist and contemporary.
Our solution
Taking inspiration from an ancient treasure chest, we came up with a sleek curved design using ripple maple and walnut. We included a pull out tray in figured walnut and a small sculpted front tray for holding small items. The finishing touch is a traditional Cedar of Lebanon bottom panel which gives a lovely fresh scent when the chest is opened.
- Integrated handmade wooden hinges
- Practical pull-out tray in figured walnut
- Ingenious sculpted internal front tray to keep small items
- Traditional Cedar of Lebanon bottom panel
David, our Creative Director, says:
“This project shows how design and functionality go hand in hand. The chest looks simple and minimalist at first glance but appearances can be deceptive. Behind the elegant exterior and sweeping curved front lies a complex design with mind boggling angles within the walnut frame components.”
