We were delighted to be involved in the creation of a new bespoke church font for Christ the King Mirfield. This very inspiring project consisted of designing the support for the new font, a collaboration between several artisans. Built in maple the curved legs support a carved Yorkshire stone font and frames three beautiful glass panels.
Special design challenge for this bespoke church font
Most church projects involve an entire community and this project was no exception. Our design needed to inspire everyone involved, work in harmony with the stone and glass work and, suited its solemn purpose. Christ the King is a modern worship space with a very active and dedicated congregation and we were keen to ensure that we understood and met all expectations.
The result is a stunning piece looking at home in this newly refurbished part of the church. It was achieved thanks to:
- the energy of the project team at Christ the King
- the impressive work of stonemason Celia Kilner
- the fabulous panels of stained glass artist Caryl Hallet
The font was dedicated by The Right Reverend Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds. Dovetailors was honoured to be invited to the ceremony. We were also touched by the warmth and welcome that the entire congregation showed on that day. It has been a real pleasure working on what is such a precious piece of furniture for a church.
“We would like to extend our thanks to the designers and makers of our new font. David Wilson and his team at Dovetailors for constructing the most amazing structure and for managing the whole design process; to Caryl Hallett for her stunning stained glass panel and to Celia Kilner, for the beautiful stonework and calligraphy.”
