We feel privileged to  have been approached by the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute to make an oak war memorial plaque to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

Project Brief

The plaque was to include the names of university alumni who lost their lives in the South African War, The Great War and World War Two. It was sobering for us to reflect on the fact that some of our own makers are of a similar age to those who died. This brought a real sense of poignancy to the project.

What we did

The project involved updating and improving an existing plaque. Computer assisted design technology, our CNC machine and traditional carving techniques worked hand in hand to create something that was truly special and will do justice to those who served in conflict as they are recognised for generations to come.

A lovingly hand-carved wreath and university coat of arms were incorporated in the design, adding warmth and personality. We also created a decorative frame featuring attractive oak burr detailing.

The finished plaque is a thing of real beauty, built in solid oak which is a symbol of strength and endurance, qualities that the men it commemorates had in abundance.

What our creative director David said

“It has been really touching to work carefully with the names of people who have sacrificed so much and we have approached this project with respect and dignity. We are very proud of the finished plaque, which is a beautiful and enduring memorial to those who lost their lives.”
