Why Dark Wood is the Perfect Choice for Contemporary Interiors

You won’t be surprised to hear that we’re very excited about the latest dark wood interior design trend. We’ve always loved working with dark wood, particularly walnut, and we believe it really lends itself to contemporary interiors and stylish modern furniture design.

The dark wood look in modern interior design

Dark wood has been making a comeback for a while, although it has always had a timeless quality. Interior designers appreciate the visual impact dark wood can make in a room scheme, bringing a sense of luxury and sophistication.

We enjoy using dark woods like walnut because of their warmth and richness. Walnut has a beautifully varied and wild grain which is enhanced by careful hand oiling. The depth of colour emphasises the elegant lines of our designs, and looks particularly striking in dark wood and glass combinations like our trestle desks.

The strength and beauty of dark wood

We have written before about the process of making dark wood furniture and why we love working with walnut.   Walnut is incredibly strong, making it ideal for furniture making. Our craft furniture makers relish working with it because it lends itself so well to planing, carving and turning. We have to admit that we enjoy the challenge of working with the interesting grain of walnut too. Thought and care is needed to make sure the patterns on each cut work well as a whole. The reward is that each individual piece of furniture has its own unique character and beauty.

Is dark wood replacing light wood in home interiors?

Rather than replacing light woods like oak and beech, furniture made of dark wood such as walnut is increasingly used in combination with pieces with a light or rustic wood finish. The overall effect is an eclectic and welcoming one, if it’s well thought through. Combining light and dark wood furniture can bring balance and interest.
