Formica is Making a Comeback

Fresh Applications for Formica

Formica has been around for more than a century and most of us  associate it with the 1950s when it brightened up the kitchens of Britain’s post-war homes.

Forget its once tacky and dated image – Formica is back and it’s had a 21st century makeover. It is now available in an incredible range of colours and there are some excellent UK suppliers providing high quality laminates.

The production process involves fusing layers of paper, impregnated with resin, at high temperature. Specialist companies bond the laminate onto plywood for use in furniture making.

As furniture designers we are extremely excited about this latest development in retro-inspired interiors. Its classic look is perfect for today’s minimalist mid-century styles and we are enjoying coming up with some creative ways to incorporate it in our furniture making.

Our elegant Desk One design now has a Formica option and can be made in a range of colours. We have found an excellent supplier that can provide samples from an extensive selection of shades. The birch ply based Formica is used to construct the desk carcase and soft-close drawers with solid walnut legs and detailing to create a really stunning contemporary freestanding desk.

Formica is a beautiful product to work with. It’s strong, sleek and versatile. We believe it adds character and individuality to a piece and we hope some of our customers will embrace the possibilities so that we can use it to create even more innovative products.
