Dovetailors designed these 4 bespoke refectory style oak tables for the crypt of Wakefield Cathedral as part of their continuous efforts to make more areas of their beautiful space accessible to the public.
To this end a kitchen area was installed and the space was prepared for meetings and gathering to be held.
The Cathedral commissioned Dovetailors to design and make a set of 4 large refectory style tables in oak which would reflect the beauty of the architecture. The tables needed to be substantial and heavy but also allow for only two people to move them. Meetings and gatherings take all shapes and sizes and so the tables needed to be used as one long table as well as in more modular individual sets.
Our design for these bespoke refectory style oak tables
- Thanks to a single column the tables look good as one whole table but also singly.
- The semi-circle legs reflect the geometry of the vaulted ceiling
- The tables are light to move. We have hollowed out the table top and engineered the legs to remove excess weight so that the table remains substuantial and manoeuverable.
- The construction is in birch ply with a solid engineered oak surface for stability in the environment of the crypt
- We have carved inscriptions and the Wakefield cross into the side of the table
- The tables can be secured together with solid brass forks
- They are finished in natural oil
The crypt benefits from stunning vaulting ceiling and it has been a real treat to access it and be part of its transformation into a very special space for meetings and gatherings.
