Our design challenge
The design and manufacture of new choir stalls for Wakefield Cathedral was a complex project that demanded all our problem solving skills.
The stalls needed to have the same warmth and character as some of the other church furniture we had made for Wakefield Cathedral. As well as complementing the historic setting, they needed to reflect the personality of the building and the vibrant modern community space.
We were sensitive to the fact that the choir stalls have a worshipful purpose and will serve the community for many generations to come.
How we built the choir stalls
The choir stalls were designed and crafted in our Leeds workshop and their size meant we used our showroom area for storage and finishing.
Each choir stall was hand finished and oiled and we invited the cathedral’s project team and congregation to visit during the making process. In order to aid moving the choir stalls we designed a bespoke set of trolleys in ply which allow the staff to move them securely with minimum lifting. This allows the Cathedral to use its space flexibly to serve its community.
We love
The burr wood detailing and hand carved lettering on each choir stall.
