The latest RIBA directory for architects features a wonderful article on the award-winning Sheffield Cathedral Gateway Project which we were privileged to have been involved in.
We were commissioned by London architects Thomas Ford and Company to design and make a ceremonial chair for Her Majesty the Queen to use during the cathedral’s Maundy Thursday service. The Sheffield Cathedral Gateway Project involved extensive refurbishment of the cathedral’s interior and the upgrading of its heating systems, flooring and facilities.
We also worked closely with the architects on a number of other specialist pieces for the project, including a solid oak organ plinth with finger-jointed corners.
Dovetailors has a great deal of experience in ecclesiastical and heritage furniture making and we are frequently called upon to create new furniture for buildings with architectural, cultural or religious significance.
Work such as the design of ceremonial chairs and cathedral furniture demands a sensitive approach and a skilled pair of hands as well as a genuine desire to support the architects involved in their passion and purpose.
As well as offering advice and support to architects throughout the design process, we deliver first class craftsmanship, technical excellence, expert advice on materials and techniques and in-house technological and manufacturing capacity. We are also specialists on generating photographic-quality accurate computer renders (using V-Ray) of our furniture designs.
We are used to collaborating with project teams and regularly work in partnership with architects, commercial organisations, clergy and communities.
We advise on the practical elements of furniture making before, during and on completion of a project.
Our master craftsmen work with passion and pride, combining traditional skills and cutting edge technology to create beautiful furniture.
