A handmade oak refectory table is a classic piece of furniture that is highly practical and, if it’s designed and built in the right way, can be an elegant addition to a kitchen or dining room.
Originally used in Medieval monasteries for banqueting, the refectory table has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years as food, entertaining and family dining have become such an important part of modern family life. This trend has been reflected in the fact that people are increasingly opting for open plan living spaces where they can eat and socialise together.
Where to find a traditional handmade oak refectory table
Traditional refectory tables were handmade using oak or walnut with trestle style legs. There are plenty of modern high street versions out there but it’s often difficult to find something that’s robust, stylish – and the right size for the room you have in mind.
Over the years we have made many versions of the classic refectory table and we have now developed a hybrid that is available to order online in our ready to buy range. Every table is made to order, which means we can change the dimensions to suit. What’s more, the simple design makes this dining table suitable for contemporary interiors and traditional farmhouse kitchens alike.
A family dining table that’s built to last
Beneath its good looking exterior is a clever construction that gives the table incredible strength and stability. The table is made using solid oak and features a three inch thick table top. The X-frame legs mean it can accommodate all round seating, giving more guest room per metre than most dining tables.
A pegged mortice and tennon construction with a lap jointed “X” delivers a robust frame that will withstand whatever family life might throw at it.
Customers love the fact that each table is made in our workshop from rough sawn logs which we hand select before planning, jointing and assembling each piece using traditional techniques.
The benefit of having a handmade oak refectory table is that it can be customised to your exact specifications. It can be a small four-seater version or a huge 20 or 30 seater centerpiece. We have suggested oak but we can make it in alternatives such as walnut, cherry, maple or elm. Just ask us for a quote.
