It is very important to us here at Dovetailors that we make sure our furniture makers have time in their week to explore their creative side, away from the constraints of commercial projects and workshop schedules.
Charlotte has been using that time to develop an idea that originates from her early days with us when she came here for work experience whilst studying furniture making at Leeds College of Building.
One of her very first projects was to design a stool for the workshop as a practical way of getting to grips with the CAD and CAM technology and understanding how it supports the design process.
Charlotte started thinking about how she could evolve her design into a three-legged chair, taking inspiration from some of her favourite designers and experimenting with different techniques.
A chair is not an easy thing to design. Consideration needs to be given to its weight and strength – not to mention the comfort of the person who will be sitting on it.
The finished chair will be made of oak and Charlotte is currently developing her design to refine the legs, seat and weight to make the chair stackable. It is proving to be a great way for her to learn more about the 5-axis CNC machine and its capabilities. The design is also being adapted for one of our current ecclesiastical projects and we will be sharing more news on that soon.
