Sustainable Church Furniture Design

Craig head maker

It is a great privilege to be invited into church communities to work on a piece of furniture or a refurbishment project that will have a powerful and lasting impact on those involved, not to mention the future generations who will use the space.

More often than not, we will have become involved as a result of a recommendation from one of the cathedrals and churches up and down the country that we are fortunate to have worked with. Our customers value not only our design and manufacturing expertise and our ability to work in harmony with architects, congregations and others, they also hold our commitment to sustainability in high esteem.

Responsible sourcing

Many of our customers, particularly when it comes to our commercial and ecclesiastical work, care deeply about the provenance of the materials we use. As wood furniture manufacturers, we have a huge amount of knowledge about different woods and their merits so we make sure we only work with suppliers who we know will provide us with quality materials from trusted sources. We are also proud to be FSC Certified® (FSC® C007915) and part of a robust supply chain that cares deeply about responsible sourcing.

Efficient workshop practices

All our manufacturing is carried out in our own workshop which means we have complete control over our design and making processes. We have developed highly efficient systems to create as little waste as possible. Having invested in the latest CAD/CAM technology, we have the capability to make complex calculations which not only enables us to be innovative with our creative ideas, it also helps us design with efficiency and sustainability in mind.

Waste wood recycling

We make a real effort to waste as little wood as possible in our workshop but when we do have offcuts that can’t be turned into a kitchen chopping board for example, we recycle them with the help of Leeds Wood Recycling CIC. Leeds Wood Recycling sells reclaimed wood like ours to the public, uses it to make commissions and trains disadvantaged people in techniques such as sanding, cutting and sorting.

Designing for longevity

Of course, one of the most sustainable things about our church furniture design is the fact that we are creating pieces that will be around for a long time, rather than being discarded in a few years. We work closely with the communities we become involved with to design furniture that serves a practical purpose, is flexible enough to meet fluid and evolving needs and is designed in such a way as to add beauty and value to its surroundings.
